Earth Science Vocabulary Words

| erosion | the process by which wind, water, ice or gravity transport soil and sediment from location to another. |
| deposition | the process by which material is laid down. |
| floodplain | an area along a river that forms from sediment deposited when the river overflows its banks. |
| alluvial fan | a fan-shaped mass of rock material deposited by a stream when the slope of the land decreases sharply. |
| delta | a mass of material deposited in a triangular shape at the mouth of a river or stream. |
| groundwater | the water that is beneath the earth's surface |
| shoreline | the boundary between land and the body of water |
| beach | an area of the shoreline that is made up of deposited sediment. |
| sandbar | a low ridge of sand deposited along the shore of a lake or sea |
| barrier island | a long ridge of sand or narrow island that lies parallel to the shore |
| dunes | mounds of wind-deposited sand |
| loess | thick deposits of windblown, fine-grained sediment. |
| glacier | a large mass of moving ice that forms by the compaction of snow by natural forces. |
| glacial drift | the general term for all the materials carved out and deposited by a glacier. |
| creep | the slow downhill movement of weathered rock material. |
| rockfall | when rocks fall down a steep slope. |
| landslide | the sudden and rapid movement of a large amount of material downslope. |
| mudflow | a rapid movement of a large mass of mud |
| topography | the shape and size of the land features of Earth's surface |
| topographic map | shows the shape of Earth's surface with lines that represent different elevations. |
| contour lines | a line that connects points of equal elevations on a map. |
| relief | the difference between the highest and lowest elevations in an area. |
| contour interval | the difference in elevation between two contour lines. |
| index contour | on a map. a darker, heavier contour line that is usually every fifth line and that indicates a change in elevation. |
| scale | shows the relationship between the measurements on model map, or diagram and the actual measurement or distance. |
| slope | a measure of the slant of a line, the ratio of rise over run. |
| remote sensing | the process of gathering and analyzing information about an object without physical contact with the object. |
| global positioning system | a network of satellites orbiting Earth to measure positions on earth. |
| geographic information system | an automated system for capturing, storing, retrieving, analyzing, manipulating and displaying geographic data. |
