Forms of Energy (Unit 5 & 6)

TermDefinition
Circuit a closed conducting circle or loop through which current can flow
Closed circuit a circuit that electricity can travel through (complete/working circuit)
Electric current the flow of electricity through a conductor
Electrical energy energy that is absorbed or delivered by an electric circuit
Energy the ability to do work
Light energy a form of energy which our eyes can detect
Mechanical energy energy of motion (PE + KE = ME)
Medium matter that energy travels through, such as solids, liquids, or gases
Open circuit a circuit that electricity cannot travel through (incomplete circuit)
Reflection the bouncing back of light rays from a surface
Refraction the bending of light as it moves through one medium into another
Prism A transparent object that refracts or bends and separates white light into the colors of the rainbow
Sound energy energy produced by vibrations
Thermal energy energy related to the temperature of an object or a substance
Conductor A material that lets heat or electricity travel through it easily
Insulator A material that does not let heat or electricity move through it easily
Series Circuit An electric circuit in which the electrical charges have only one path to follow
Parallel Circuit An electric circuit that has more than one path for the electric charges to follow
Chemical energy Energy that can be released by a chemical reaction
Opaque Not allowing light to pass through
Transparent Allows light to pass through
Translucent Allows only some light to pass through
Mixture a combination of two or more substances that keep their physical properties (can usually be easily separated)
Solution a mixture that when added to another substance, mixes evenly
Solubility the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance, such as sugar dissolving in water
