Integumentary System

TermDefinition
Arrector pili Muscle associated with hair follicles
Ceruminous glands Glands in the ear canal that produce ear wax
Cutaneous membrane Skin
Dermis Inner layer of the skin that contains the blood vessels, nerves, glands, and hair follicles.
Epidermis Outermost layer of the skin
Hypodermis Below the skin; a sheet of areolar connective tissue and adipose beneath the dermis of the skin
Keratinization Process by which the cells of the epidermis become filled with keratin and move to the surface where they are sloughed off.
Melanin Dark brown or black pigment found in parts of the body
Melanocytes Cells that produce the dark or black pigment melanin
Sebaceous glands Oil glands of the skin that produce body oil
Sebum Oily secretion from sebaceous glands.
Stratum corium Another name for the dermis
Stratum corneum Outermost layer of the epidermis; consists of flattened, dead, keratinized cells
Subcutaneous layer Also called hypodermis or superficial fascia
Sudoriferous glands Glands in the skin that produce perspiration
Sweat glands Also called sudoriferous glands
