Cricks Nerve Divisio

Cricks Nerve Divisions Flash Cards

QuestionAnswer
What structure is made of axons and connective tissue? nerve
What structure emerges from the brain and provides nerves to the head (cranium)? cranial nerve
What structures emerge from the spinal cord and travel to various parts of the body to provide nervous coverage to each region? spinal nerve
What is a small mass of nervous tisses located away from the spinal cord and are closely associated with cranial and spinal nerves? ganglia
What nerve structures are found inside the hollow organs of the digestive tract? enteric plexus
What nerve structure carries impulses from the brain to distant structures that respond to the impulses? efferent neurons
What function of the nerves involves interpreting stimuli and generating impulses to respond to those stimuli? integrative function
What function of the nerves involves interpreting the internal and external environment of the body, and sending that info as impulses to the brain? sensory function
What function of the nerves involves reacting to impulses generated by the brain and spinal cord, then causing action as a result? motor function
What type of nerve structures analyse and or store sensory impulses, then generate responses based on that information? interneuron
What type of nerve carries motor impulses from the brain or spinal cord? efferent nerve
What types of cells respond to motor impulses by doing some sort of action? effectors
What part of the peripheral nervous system collects nerve impulses from the head, body wall, limbs as well as from the sensory organs AND innervates the skeletal muscle system? somatic nervous system
What part of the peripheral nervous system received sensory impulses from the visceral organs as well as provides impulses to smooth muscles? autonomic nervous system
What part of the peripheral nervous system received impulses from the walls of the digestive tract and governs contraction and secretions by those organs? enteric nervous system
What does the sympathetic nervous system cause when it is innervated? fight or flight syndrome (excitation)
What does the parasympathetic nervous system cause when it is innervated? the opposite of fight or flight (calming- return to normal)
What is the basic structure of the nervous system- that are specialized for nerve impulse conduction? neuron
What is the function of a dendrite? The part of a neuron that received impulses from adjacent cells
What is the function of the cell body? metabolic processes of the cell happen here (see sophomore bio I notes)
What is the function of the nucleus? to control the activities of the cell
What is the function of the axon? to conduct impulses from the cell to the dendrites of an adjacent cell
What is the function of the axon hillock? When the cell body generates an impulse, it starts at the axon hillock
What is the function of an axon collateral? to branch out from the axon and deliver impulses to more than just one cell location
What is the function of the Shwann cell? they surround axons and grow myelin sheaths that insulate the axon and speed impulse conduction
What is the function of myelin sheath? to insulate the axon and speed impulse conduction
What is the function of the Node of Ranvier? these are gaps in the the myelin sheath that wraps the axon. the gaps play a role in impulse conduction.
What is the function of an axon terminal? to communicate impulses to adjacent cells
What is the function of the synaptic bulb? to release neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft, causing an reaction from the receiving cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
