MRC Earthquakes

TermDefinition
Earthquake Violent shaking of the ground as a result of movements within the earth's crust (tectonic plates)
Tsunami Also known as a seismic sea wave, is a series of waves in a water body caused by the movement of a large volume of water in the Ocean by Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions
Tectonic Plates Pieces of Earth's crust and uppermost mantle and have 2 main types oceanic crust and continental crust
Continental Plate Tectonic plate that forms part of the land mass
Oceanic Plate Tectonic plate that forms part of the ocean crust
Convergent Boundary Type of boundary where two plates meet together and start to push against one another.
Divergent Boundary Type of boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other.
Seismic Relating to earthquakes or other vibrations of the earth and its crust.
Magnitude Another way of saying 'size'
Richter Scale Measures the magnitude of an earthquake measured using a seismometer. A Richter scale is normally numbered 1-10
Seismometer An instrument that responds to ground motions, such as caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and explosions.
Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre Operated by Bureau of Meteorology (Bureau) and Geoscience Australia (GA). Monitors seismic activity to provide early warning of Tsunami
