IPC Solutions

Solutions

TermDefinition
Solute A substance that is dissolved in another substance.
Solvent A substance capable of dissolving another substance.
Solution A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances, which may be solids, liquids, gases, or a combination of these.
Solubility The ability of a substance to dissolve.
Temperature A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample of matter.
Concentration The amount of a substance in an amount of another substance.
Polarity/Polar Electrons are not equally shared in bonding; one part of the molecule is more negative than the other part of the molecule.
Nonpolar Electrons are equally shared; does not contain poles.
Agitation Shaking or stirring for the purpose of mixing.
The Universal Solvent Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. This means that wherever water goes, either through the ground or through our bodies, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients.
