Term | Definition |
---|---|
Solute | A substance that is dissolved in another substance. |
Solvent | A substance capable of dissolving another substance. |
Solution | A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances, which may be solids, liquids, gases, or a combination of these. |
Solubility | The ability of a substance to dissolve. |
Temperature | A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample of matter. |
Concentration | The amount of a substance in an amount of another substance. |
Polarity/Polar | Electrons are not equally shared in bonding; one part of the molecule is more negative than the other part of the molecule. |
Nonpolar | Electrons are equally shared; does not contain poles. |
Agitation | Shaking or stirring for the purpose of mixing. |
The Universal Solvent | Water dissolves more substances than any other liquid. This means that wherever water goes, either through the ground or through our bodies, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients. |
