Plate Tectonics

TermDefinition
Convergent boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates that are colliding.
Divergent boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from one another.
Transform boundary The boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past one another.
Subsidence The gradual caving in or sinking of an area of land.
Tectonic plate The layers of the earth's crust that move. The movement causes earthquakes.
Rift Zone An area where plates of the earth's crust are moving away from each other.
Seafloor Spreading The formation of new areas of oceanic crust, which occurs through the rising of magma at mid ocean ridges.
Convection Current A current in a fluid that results from convection. Convection is the transfer of heat in a gas or liquid by the circulation of currents.
Fault A crack in the Earth’s crust.
Ocean Basin Anywhere on Earth covered by water.
Volcano A type of mountain, formed by molten rock that has erupted onto the Earth's surface.
Earthquake The result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves.
