Vocabulary Terminology for Chapter 27 in Friendly Biology
| Question or Term | Answer or Definition |
|---|---|
| Five senses are: | 1. Seeing 2. Hearing 3. Smelling 4. Tasting 5. Feeling |
| Cornea is | the clear outer covering of our eyes |
| Sclera is | the white portion on the perimeter of our eyes |
| The lacrimal gland | bathes the cornea with tears to maintain hydration and washh debris away. |
| Iris is | the colored portion of our eye |
| Pupil is | the black circular portion of our eye that adjusts the amount of light which can enter the eye |
| Aqueous humor is | the fluid in front of the lens of our eye |
| Vitreous humor is | the fluid behind the lens of our eye which is much thicker than Aqueous humor. |
| Glaucoma is | excess fluid in the eye |
| The retina is | the multilayered surface at the back of the eye which has specialized cells capable of converting light into nerve stimulus. |
| Tiny muscles | encircle the lens and allow it to change shape which allows images to be focused on the retina. |
| Optic Nerve | transmits messages to the brain through all the nerve endings in the retina. |
| The ears | are capable of converting sound energy into vibrations which stimulate the nerve endings to allow us to hear. |
| Sound moves | into the auditory canal and strikes the Tympanic membrane which causes three tiny bones of the middle ear to vibrate. |
| Cochlea is | fluid filled and is stimulated by the vibrations which then sends signals to the auditory nerve to the brain. |
| The semicircular canals | within the ear work to maintain balance. |
| Chemical stimuli | is created by contact with tiny molecules of substances floating in the air coming into contact with our nerve endings in our nose and they are then converted to nerve impulses and sent to the brain. |
| Olfactory Nerve | is how the nerve endings in our nose send the stimuli information to the brain. |
| The tongue is | the main organ of taste. |
| Papillae are | on the surface of the tongue and house taste buds which consist of taste receptor cells. |
| Skin is | the primary organ of touch. |
| Largest organ of our body is | skin which has the most mass or weight. |
| Skin consists of two layers: | 1. Epidermis, which creates squamous cells that form the surface of skin. 2. Dermis, which is deeper and houses blood vessels, nerves, glands & fatty tissue. |
| Touch sensations travel by | Afferent neurons to the spinal cord & brain. |
| Dermatomes are | regions of sensation that skin can be divided into. |
| Maleus, Incus & Stapes are | the three tiny bones of the middle ear. |
