Friendly Bio. Ch 24

Vocabulary Terminology for Chapter 24 in Friendly Biology

Question or TermAnswer or Definition
Renal & Urinary systems Remove wastes created by cells and cell remnants from the body.
Renal system consists of 2 kidneys and the blood vessels that bring blood to kidneys and away from kidneys.
Glomerulus Is the filtration system of the kidney.
Fenestrations Which are special openings in the walls of the arterioles within the glomerulus, allow waste products as well as water to pass through.
Water, sodium, & potassium Are conserved by the body and are returned back into circulation.
Kidneys Not only remove waste, but maintain pH of the blood and they also produce hormones that control blood pressure and the creation of RBC’s or erythrocytes..
Proteins present in urine Indicate possible kidney damage or damage to other parts of the urinary system.
Urinary system includes Ureters, bladder, urethra
Glucose present in urine Indicate an exceeded threshold capacity of the kidney.
Insulin Which is produced by pancreas, functions to open the cell membranes and allow glucose to enter.
A lack of insulin Will cause the glucose not to be able to pass into cells, and thus the cells starve, the glucose stays in the blood creating high levels which then goes onto the kidneys to be expelled in urine, which will then have the presence of glucose.
ureters Connect the kidney to the bladder and allow the urine to drain freely.
Bladder Stores urine until full then empties the urine out of the body using a urethra.
