Topic 2 The Cell Systems Lesson 3 Obtaining and Removing Materials

QuestionAnswer
What does the cell membrane help to meaintain in a cell? homeostasis
What is the cell membrane made up of? made up of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids
The cell membrane is selectively permeable- What does this mean? it allows some things to freely pass, and some things to not pass at all (or less freely)
What is active transport? it is the movement of materials across a cell membrane with the use of energy
How do molecules move in active transport? molecules move from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration
What do transport proteins do during active transport? they pick up specific molecules and carry them across the membrane
What is endocytosis? particles move into (enters) the cell
What is exocytosis? particles move out (exit) the cell
Why are endocytosis and exocytosis both parts of active transport? they both require energy
What is passive transport? it is the movement across a cell membrane without the use of energy
What is diffusion? molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
How is the scent of a candle an example of diffusion? when lit, it diffuses around the room, filling theroom with the scent
What is osmosis? it is the diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
What is facilitated diffusion? proteins provide a pathway for some molecules (sugar) to move through the cell

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
