Topic 2 The Cell Systems Lesson 2 Cell Structures

QuestionAnswer
What are organelles? tiny structures that carry out a specific function within a cell
Where can a cell wall be found? in plants; some fungi, bacteria and protists
Where are cell walls NOT found? in animals
What is the structure (parts) of a cell wall? rigid, made of cellulose/chitlin
What is the function (job) of a cell wall? to protect and support the cell
Where are cell membranes found? they are found in all cells
What is the structure of a cell membrane? rigid, made of cellulose/chitlin
What is the function of the cell membrane? to protect and support the cell
What is the structure of cytoplasm? it is a clear fluid made mostly of water and some salt
What is the function of cytoplasm? it holds all of the cells organelles; it carries nutrients and proteins throughout the cell
What is the structure of the nucleus? it is large; oval and contains DNA
What is the function of the nucleus? it controls the cell activities; DNA provides instructions for cell functions
What is the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes? a maze of passageways; ribosomes are small "dots" located on the ER and in the cytoplasm
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes? processes many substances like proteins and lipids; ribosomes make proteins
What is the structure of the golgi apparatus? flattened sacks of tubes
What is the function of the golgi apparatus? it is like a warehouse; it packages and distributes materials around and out of the cell
What is the structure of the mitochondria? it is rod shaped
What is the function of the mitochondria? it is the powerhouse of the cell; it creates energy
What is the structure of the chloroplasts? in plants and some bacteria and protists
What is the function of the chloroplasts? captures energy from the sun and turns it into food
What is the structure of lysosomes? they are small, round organelles
What is the function of lysosomes? they are the "recycling" center; they break down wastes
What is the structure of vacuoles? they are water filled sacs; they are larger in plants
What is the function of vacuoles? they stor water, food and other materials
Specialized Cells- Describe unicellular organisms. the cell performs all functions to sustain life; if the cell dies, the organism dies
Specialized Cells- Describe multicellular organisms. they are more complex; the cells do more specific jobs
How do cells make up an organism? cell--tissue--organ--organ system--organism

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
