Water in the Air
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| precipitation | water, in liquid form, that falls from the atmosphere. EXAMPLES: rains, snow, hail, sleet |
| condensation | the process by which a gas turns into a liquid. FORMS: clouds and dew |
| evaporation | the process by which liquid turns into a gas |
| runoff | water, usually from precipitation, that flows across land and collects in rivers, streams, and eventually the ocean. |
| deposition | process by which water vapor turns directly into a solid without going through the liquid phase. EXAMPLE: frost |
| sublimation | process by which snow and ice change into water vapor (a gas) without going through the liquid phase EXAMPLE: ice cubes shrinking in the freezer |
| relative humidity | ratio of water vapor to the amount of water vapor the air can hold at a given temperature |
| dew point | temperature at which water vapor condenses to a liquid |
| percolation | takes water all the way down to the ground water |
| transpiration | (plant uptake) water taken from the ground water or surface. 99% is released back into the atmosphere as water vapor. |
| transportation | (moving) the movement of solid, liquid, and gaseous water through the atmosphere |
| infiltration | movement of water into the ground from the surface |
