Solar System Quiz

Solar System Flashcards for Quiz #2

TermDefinition
Mercury * Even though Mercury is the closest to the Sun it still gets extremely cold because it does not have an atmosphere. * Mercury has drastic temperature changes because it has a very thin atmosphere and rotates slowly.
Venus * Venus, like Uranus, has a retrograde rotation, which means they rotate clockwise. * Venus is the hottest planet because it has thick atmosphere which traps heat and causes the greenhouse effect.
Earth * Earth lies within the "Goldilocks Zone" around the Sun because it is habitable
Mars * Iron oxide gives Mars its reddish/orange color
Asteroid Belt * An asteroid is small, rocky, iron or icy debris flying in space * Ceres is the largest object in the Asteroid Belt.
Meteoroid * A meteoroid is a small asteroid.
Meteor * A meteor is a meteoroid that burns up in our atmosphere.
Meteorite * A meteorite is a meteoroid that hits the ground.
Inner Planets * Inner planets are small, rocky, and more dense than the outer planets.
Jupiter * Gas Giant * Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is a gigantic storm size of two to three earth that has been raging for hundreds of years.
Jupiter * Jupiter has the most mass of any planet in the solar system. 1,321 Earths could fit inside of Jupiter. * Europa, Io, Callisto, Ganymede Moons
Saturn * Gas Giant * Saturn is the least dense planet in the solar system. * The density of Saturn is significant because it can float on water
Uranus * Gas Giant * Venus, like Uranus, has a retrograde rotation, which means they rotate clockwise. * Uranus rotates on its side.
Neptune * Gas Giant * Neptune is blue because of methane
Outer Planets * Outer planets are large, gaseous, and less denser than the inner planets.
Comets * A comet is A solid body of ice, rock, dust, and gas. * An ion (gas) tail of a comet points away from the sun. * A dust tail on a comet is caused by dust and gas that’s affected by solar wind and radiation.
Moons * A natural satellite is not man-made and orbits a planet, like the moon.
Artificial Satellites * An artificial satellite is man-made satellite that orbits a planet.
Neptune * Gas Giant * Neptune is blue because of methane
Pluto * Pluto is considered a dwarf planet because it's too small to be a planet. * Pluto’s orbit compared to Neptune’s orbit is that Pluto’s orbit is that Pluto crosses in front of Neptune’s orbit making Pluto closer to the Sun.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
