Elements of Music

TermDefinition
Rhythm Combination or patterns of sounds and silences of varying lengths.
Pitch The high or low tone or sound of a note in music.
Melody The tune of the music. A collection of pitches or tones.
Tempo The speed of the music, fast or slow or in between.
Dynamics The volume of the music. Degrees of loud, soft, and accents.
Form The overall organization or structure of a piece of music. How the multiple parts fit together.
Timbre (tam-bur) Also called tone color. The identifying sound of an instrument or voice.
Harmony The texture of the music. Thick or thin multiple layers of music happening at the same time.
Genre Category of music characterized by a distinctive style, form, or content, such as jazz, march, and country.
