Heredity quiz friday 4/26/19

Petals Attract pollinators, protect inner structures
Sepal To protect & support flower, keep from drying out
Stem provide support; transport water & nutrients, store water and food
Anther Produces pollen (sperm)
Filament stalk holds anther up
Stamen Filament & Stalk (Male part)
Stigma Sticky part where pollen sticks
Style Stalk that supports the stigma
Ovary Where fertilization occurs (pollen + egg = seed), seeds are formed turned into fruit
Pistil Female parts
Angiosperms Flowering Plants (Flowers - reproductive structures, fruit - not always sweet)
Pollination The transfer of pollen to a stigma, ovule, flower, or plant to allow fertilization.
Asexual reproduction Offspring are created from a single organism (parent) and are exact copies of that parent.
Binary fission Divide into two identical cells (single-celled organisms)
Budding and offspring grows out of the parents body. Not an equal dividing like binary fission (hydra, yeast, cactus)
Fragmentation/Regeneration offspring form out of broken off pieces of the parent (coral, starfish, worms, plants
Sexual reproduction The genetic information from two parents is combined to create offspring with unique genetic traits.
Internal fertilization Fertilization (egg + sperm) occurs within the female, except for seahorses. (mammals, insects, birds, reptiles). Mammals have live births and insects, birds, reptiles lay eggs
External fertilization Fertilization occurs outside the female in a watery medium. (fish and amphibians) The females lay the eggs in the water and the male fertilizes the eggs.
