Earthquakes

TermDefinition
earthquake vibrations of the Earth's crust
seismic waves energy in the form of vibrations
P waves Primary waves: fast moving waves that can travel through solids and liquids
S waves Secondary waves: slower moving waves that can only travel through solids
Surface waves the slowest moving seismic wave which is felt last
focus area along the fault where the slippage first occurs
epicenter point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus
aftershocks smaller tremors felt after an earthquake as the opposing plates settle back together
Pacific Ring of Fire major earthquake and volcanic zone that forms along the continents bordering the Pacific Ocean
seismograph an instrument used for recording seismic waves
magnitude the amount of energy released by an earthquake
Richter Scale a scale that measures magnitude from 1 - 10
Mercalli Scale a scale that measures damage caused by an earthquake in Roman Numerals from I - XII
tsunami giant ocean wave which occurs due to an earthquake with an epicenter on the ocean floor
seismic gaps a place where a fault has been locked and unable to move,
