Earthquakes
| Term | Definition |

| earthquake | vibrations of the Earth's crust |
| seismic waves | energy in the form of vibrations |
| P waves | Primary waves: fast moving waves that can travel through solids and liquids |
| S waves | Secondary waves: slower moving waves that can only travel through solids |
| Surface waves | the slowest moving seismic wave which is felt last |
| focus | area along the fault where the slippage first occurs |
| epicenter | point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus |
| aftershocks | smaller tremors felt after an earthquake as the opposing plates settle back together |
| Pacific Ring of Fire | major earthquake and volcanic zone that forms along the continents bordering the Pacific Ocean |
| seismograph | an instrument used for recording seismic waves |
| magnitude | the amount of energy released by an earthquake |
| Richter Scale | a scale that measures magnitude from 1 - 10 |
| Mercalli Scale | a scale that measures damage caused by an earthquake in Roman Numerals from I - XII |
| tsunami | giant ocean wave which occurs due to an earthquake with an epicenter on the ocean floor |
| seismic gaps | a place where a fault has been locked and unable to move, |
