Earth Science

Earth Science Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Earthquake a sudden release of energy under Earth's surface that makes the ground shake or crack
Lava The extremely hot, molten rock that is blown through a crack in Earth's surface when a volcano erupts
Climate Average weather conditions of a region year after year
Evaporation or Vaporation Physical change in matter from a liquid to a gas
Hydroelectricity Electricity made from the energy of moving or falling water
Moon A natural satellite that orbits a planet
Fossils Preserved parts or traces of animals and plants that lived in the past
Condensation physical change in matter from a gas to a liquid
Renewable Resources Material from the Earth that can be replaced by nature within a relatively short period of time
Oil A flammable liquid produced from organic mater buried under layers of sediments for millions of years
Alternative Energy Energy generated by natural processes that are renewable
Runoff The flow of water, from rain, snow melt, or other sources, over land
Geothermal Energy Energy that comes from the natural heat inside the Earth
Rotation Turn or spin on its axis; the 24-hour time period it takes the Earth to make one complete spin on its axis
Decay To rot and break down into small parts
Canyon A deep gorge in the surface of the Earth formed by the erosion of moving water and sand
Weather Describes the current condition of the atmosphere
Sedimentary Rock Rock made of layers of compressed organic and inorganic sediments
Fossil Fuels A non renewable flammable material made from the waste and remains of plants and animals in the earths crust that is used to produce heat and power
Revolution The path one object takes as it revolves around another object in space the earth revolves or goes around the sun once every 365 days
Erosion the movement of weathered material on earths surfaces by wind water or ice
Solar Energy Energy that comes from the sun
Weathering The breakdown of rock into smaller particles from the effects of wind, and ice
Volcano A mixture of hot rocks, ash, and gases from the middle of the earth that blow through a crack in earths surface
Delta A triangle-shaped landform at the mouth of a river as it empties into another body of water
Axis A line, real or imaginary, around which something spins
Wind energy Energy that comes from changing the power of moving air into a useful form of energy
Sun The star at the center of the solar system that applies heat and light to earths ; its gravity keeps its solar system in orbit
Nonrenewable Resources Materials from the earth that cannot be replaced in a lifetime ( coal, oil, natural gas)
Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet or hail that falls form clouds in the sky
Sediment Small pieces of rock
Landform features on surface of the Earth such as mountains, hills, dunes, oceans, and rivers
Water cycle The changes to water when it evaporates into the air, condenses into the clouds, and then back precipitates back down into the earths surface
Landslide The rapid falling if earth's materials down a slope
Sand Dunes Hills formed by the wind blowing sand
Earth A planet in the solar system that has life on it
Biofuels Fuel made from plants, animal wastes, and decomposing plant and animal tissue
Natural Gas A flammable material, without a definite form, produced from organic material buried under layers of sediment found near oil deposits

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
