Ecosystem | A system comprising all the biotic and abiotic factors in an area and all the interactions among them. |
Biome | One of the world’s major communities, classified according to the predominant vegetation and characterized by adaptation of organisms to that particular environment. |
Habitat | A place where an organism naturally lives and grows. |
Micro habitat | A very small specialized habitat, such as the space under a rock. |
Population | A group of interacting individuals of the same species located in the same area. |
Biodiversity | The number of different species of plants and animals in an area. |
Succession (Ecological Succession) | A series of changes in the species composition of a community over time. |
Climax Community | A relatively stable state of succession, or the end product of succession. |
Sustainable | Capable of maintaining the current community at a steady level without exhausting natural resources or causing severe ecological damage. |
Runoff | Rainfall and surface water that drains or flows from the land into streams, rivers, lakes, or the ocean. |
Over-fishing | Taking more fish out of an ecosystem than can be replaced by the reproductive rates of the remaining populations. |

Climate Change | A long-term change in the prevailing environmental conditions in a part of the Earth. |
Invasive Species | A species that enters an area from somewhere else and disrupts the native ecosystem. |
Long-Term Environmental Change | Environmental change that occurs slowly over time and affects organisms over generations. |
Short-Term Environmental Change | An environmental change that happens quickly but does not last a long time. |
Extinct | The permanent disappearance of a species from the Earth. |
Adaptation | A process by which a population becomes better suited to its environment by increasing the frequencies of alleles that provide benefits to survival and reproduction. |
Pollution | Harmful substances that contaminate a natural environment. |
Climate | Average weather conditions for a region year after year. |
Abiotic Factors | Factors that are neither living nor produced by living things. |
Biotic Factors | Factors that are living or produced by living things. |
Competition | More than one individual or population in an ecosystem relies upon the same limited resources. |
