Cell organelles

TermDefinition
Cell wall Found in plant cells. Outer covering that helps to support the cell.
Cell membrane Found in all cells. Flexible, semi-permeable membrane which controls what enters or exits the cell.
Nucleus Control center of the cell.
Nucleolus Dark body inside the nucleus. Makes ribosomes.
Nuclear Membrane Semi-permeable membrane that controls what enters or exits the nucleus.
Chromatin Inside the nucleus. Long thin strands of DNA. Blueprint of how to make all proteins in your body.
Chloroplast Found in plant cells. Contains chlorophyll and makes glucose by photosynthesis.
Golgi body Packages protein for export out of the cell (secretion).
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) Canal system which transports materials within the cell.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) Contain many small dense organelles called ribosomes which make proteins according to the "blueprint" in DNA.
Lysosome Sac filled with digestive enzymes. Breaks down and recycles old cell parts.
Centrioles A pair of tube-like structures that are perpendicular to each other. Important for cell division.
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell. Glucose (sugar) is "burnt" in the presence of oxygen to give the cell energy (respiration).
Vacuole Animal cells : small sacs filled with water, food or waste. Storage area for the cell. Plant cells: larger vacuoles to provide more storage for water for photosynthesis. Also helps support green stem plants.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
