Solar System Objects

TermDefinition
solar system Made up of the sun, the planets, their moons, and a variety of smaller objects.
astronomical unit A unit of distance equal to the average distance between Earth and the sun, about 150 million kilometers.
sun A gaseous body much larger than anything else in the solar system.
planet Round, orbits the sun, and has cleared out the region of the solar system along its orbit.
moon A natural satellite (a celestial body in orbit).
asteroid Small, mostly rocky bodies.
meteoroids Chunks of rock or dust smaller than asteroids.
comets Loose balls of ice and rock that usually have very long, narrow orbits.
