The amount of material that an object has in it Mass
The amount of space that matter takes up Volume
Something about matter that can be observed and tells you what matter is like Property
These properties can be used to describe and sort matter Physical Properties of Matter
What are examples of physical properties? Color, shape, size, mass
An important property of matter is its state. What are the 3 states of matter? 1. solid; 2. liquid; 3. gas
What are the properties of a solid? has a definite shape and volume; particles are very close together; particles don't move, but vibrate where they are
What are the properties of a liquid? has a definite volume, but does NOT have a definite shape; particles move slower than the particles in a gas; particles slide past each other; takes the shape of its container
What are the properties of a gas? does NOT have a definite shape or volume; particles move very fast and are far away from each other; takes the shape and volume of its container; free to move about the container/area
Two or more substances that are mixed together, but can easily be separated Mixture
What is an example of a mixture? Salad
A mixture in which one substance spreads evenly throughout another substance Solution
What is an example of a Soultion? Salt and water
Length is a property of matter that can be measured. What does length measure? The distance between one point and another
What are some customary units for measuring length? Inches, feet, yards, miles
What is the metric unit for measuring length? Meter
Volume is a property of matter that can be measured. Volume = ? volume = length x width x height
What is the unit for measuring volume? cubic meter
What is a unit for measuring the volume of liquids? liter
What is a graduated cylinder? When is it used? Graduated cylinders are used to measure the volume of liquids. It is marked with lines that are equal distances apart
Mass is a property of matter that can be measured. What do scientists use to measure mass? Balance
What is the basic unit for measuring mass? Gram
A property of matter that can be measured. It is how much mass is in a certain volume of matter. Density
Something with greater density will ? Sink
Something with less density will ? Float
