What is an opportunistic infection Diseases caused by microorganisms that normally live in or on the body without causing disease in people with normal immune system
Suppression of the immune system provides? opportunity for the harmless to become harmful
What are opportunistic infections caused by? viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa that are kept in check by an intact immune system.
What are the 5 most common opportunistic infections Candidia albicans (yeast), Crytococcus neoformans, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, Toxoplasna gondii, and Mycobacterium avium complex
Candidia albicans - yeast Causes candidiasis, thrush, esophageal, vaginal or anal infections. short-lived, superficial skin infections to fata systemic diseases. Normal flora of mouth, genitalia, large intestine or skin. Intact immune system holds down growth. Many treatments
Crytococcu neoformans Fungi. Respiratory, CNS, meningitis. In pigeon droppings
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia Fungi. Most common opportunistic infection in AIDS patients
Toxoplasma gondii Protozoa. Encephalitis, retinitis, and disseminated. Can infect over 200 species of animals. cats normal reservoir
Mycobacterium avium complex disease Bacteria. Implicated in AIDS wasting syndrome. May become disseminated.
