Motion and Force
Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Motion | An object's change in position relative to a reference point |
| Reference point | The object that appears to stay in place |
| Speed | the distance traveled divided by the time interval during which the motion occured |
| Velocity | the speed of an object in a particular direction |
| Acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes over time; and abject accelerates if its speed, direction, or both change |
| Force | A push or a pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of the object ; force has size and direction |
| newton(N) | The SI unit for force (symbol, N) |
| Net Force | The combination of all of the forces acting on a object |
| Balanced forces | Will not cause a change in the motion of a moving object |
| Unbalanced forces | Produce a change in motion, such as a change in speed or a change in direction |
| Energy | Ability to work and move |
| Kinetic energy | Is energy in moving objects or mass. Some examples are mechanical energy and electrical energy |
| Potential energy | Is any form of energy that has stored potential that can be put into future use |
| How do I know when something is moving? | |
| Energy Transformation | Energy transformation is the process of changing energy from one form into another. In physics, energy is a quantity that provides the capacity to perform work. |
