Motion and Force

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Motion An object's change in position relative to a reference point
Reference point The object that appears to stay in place
Speed the distance traveled divided by the time interval during which the motion occured
Velocity the speed of an object in a particular direction
Acceleration the rate at which velocity changes over time; and abject accelerates if its speed, direction, or both change
Force A push or a pull exerted on an object in order to change the motion of the object ; force has size and direction
newton(N) The SI unit for force (symbol, N)
Net Force The combination of all of the forces acting on a object
Balanced forces Will not cause a change in the motion of a moving object
Unbalanced forces Produce a change in motion, such as a change in speed or a change in direction
Energy Ability to work and move
Kinetic energy Is energy in moving objects or mass. Some examples are mechanical energy and electrical energy
Potential energy Is any form of energy that has stored potential that can be put into future use
How do I know when something is moving?
Energy Transformation Energy transformation is the process of changing energy from one form into another. In physics, energy is a quantity that provides the capacity to perform work.
