| trunk | the middle division of the body that contains most of the vital organs |
| appendages | arm or leg of the body |
| system | a group of organs that together perform some large function for an organism |
| organ | large structure made of several types of tissues specifically arranged to perform a definite function or functions |
| cardiovascular system | body system that includes the heart, blood, and blood vessels; also called circulatory system |
| plasma | straw-colored liquid that makes up over 50% of blood |
| red blood cells | cells that transport oxygen to other cells of the body on special proteins called hemoglobin |
| platelets | any of the cell pieces in the blood that form clots and seal up cuts |
| heart | organ that drives the blood through the body's blood vessels |
| arteries | any of the large blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart |
| arterioles | any of the smaller blood vessels that branch from arteries |
| capillaries | any of the tiny blood vessels in which the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and wastes between the body cells and blood takes place |
| venules | any of the blood vessels that carry blood from capillary networks to veins |
| veins | any of the large blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart |
| atrium | either of the upper chambers of the heart |
| ventricle | either of the lower chambers of the heart |
| pericardium | tough, slippery membrane that encloses the heart |
| pulmonary circulation | blood flow from the heart to the lungs and back |
| systemic circulation | flow of blood between the heart and the rest of the body |
| coronary circulation | blood flow to the heart tissues |
| soul and spirit | parts of a human that scientists cannot explain using scientific laws |
