consumer an organism that eats another organism
decomposer an organism that gets energy by breaking down dead organisms
herbivore an organism that eats only plants
omnivore an organism that eats both plants and animals
carnivore an organism that eats only animals (meat)
ecosystem all the living and nonliving things that are found in a particular area
food chain a simple diagram that shows the transfer of energy in an ecosystem
food web a complex diagram that shows the feeding relationships in an ecosystem
predator an animals that hunts other animals
prey an animals that is captured and eaten
scavenger an animal that gets their energy from eating the remains of things that were once alive.
camouflage a defense mechanism or tactic that organisms use to disguise their appearance, usually to blend in with their surroundings
cytoplasm jellylike substance that fills much of the cell; other cell structures are found here.
cell wall tough outer covering of a plant cell that gives it a rigid shape.
cell membrane a thin layer that surrounds al cells, and allows water and dissolved materials to apss into and out of the cells.
vacuole large storage area filled with liquid that contains various substances.
chloroplast structure where food making occurs and contains the green-colored pigment chlorophyll
nucleus controls all of the cell's activities and is very important in cell reproduction.
