Soil

TermDefinition
Weathering Water and living organisms break down rocks
Topsoil The upper layer of soil, best for plant growth
Subsoil The middle layer of soil
Bedrock The bottom layer of soil
Humus Decayed matter in soil
Erosion The movement of soil
Clay Tiny particles of soil that hold water and nutrients well
Silt Very small broken pieces of rock. Its particles are larger than clay and smaller than sand.
Sand Small grains of worn-down rock, has few nutrients, and does not hold water well.
