The Rock Cycle

TermDefinition
Weathering Wearing down of rocks by natural forces
Igneous Type of rock formed from cooling magma. Can be smooth and made of large crystals
Metamorphic Type of rock formed by high heat and/or pressure of the earth, and can have bands of rocks and colors pressed together
Sedimentary Type of rock made from tiny rock pieces that are cemented together, can contain fossils
Fossils Remains or impressions of prehistoric organisms in rock
Rocks Can be made of minerals and fossils, and might contain many different types of minerals
Diamond Can be made of minerals and fossils, and might contain many different types of minerals
Erosion The process by which wind, water, ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another
Weathering and erosion How sediment is made
Cooling How igneous rock is formed
Compaction and cementation How sedimentary rock is formed
Heat and pressure How metamorphic rock is formed
