RNA Virus(sect.2.5)

Influenza Virus:Treatments

QuestionAnswer
What Does Amantadine and Rimantadine do for the treatment of the Influenza Virus Prevents Virus from being released into the cytoplasm of the host cell.
What are Hemaglutinin and Neurominidase The two glycoproteins that make up the spikes of the envelope and contribute to the virulence of the Influenza Virus.
Hemagglutinin Spikes combine with a specific carbohydrate molecule found in all eucryotic cell membranes, the virus has the capacity to bind and clump a variety of animal cells. The name is derived from its particular agglutinating action on RBC's.
Neuraminidase Spikes Hydrolyzes the protective mucous coating of the respiratory tract, assisting the hemagglutinin to bind to host cell receptors in viral budding and release, keeping viruses from sticking together, and participates in host cell fusion.
How does Zanamivir (Relenza) & Oseltemivir (Tamiflu) help in the treatment of Influenza Blocks the Neuraminidase and thus inhibits the release and spread of virions. Spraying Zanamivir into the nose or inhaling it shortens the duration of disease symptoms by one (1) to three(3) days.
