SOIL
| Term | Definition |

| soil | a loose mixture of rock fragments, organic material, water, and air that can support the growth of vegetation |
| parent rock | a rock formation that is the source of soil |
| bedrock | the layer of rock beneath soil |
| infiltration | ability of water to move through soil |
| soil fertility | a soil's ability to hold nutrients and to supply nutrients to a plant |
| humus | the dark, organic material formed in soil from the decayed remains of plants and animals; rich in the nutrients plants need to be healthy |
| horizons | a series of layers of soil, with humus rich soil on top, sediment below that, and bedrock on the bottom; the layers are horizontal |
| leaching | the removal of substances that can be dissolved from rock, ore, or layers of soil due to the passing of water |
| top soil | top layer of soil that contains more humus than the layers below it |
