Cell Division

Ch 10, section 1 - Cell Division (mitosis)

QuestionAnswer
the process by which cells increase in number (one cell splits into two) cell division
stage of growth in the cell cycle, also the stage at which DNA and organelles duplicate interphase
series of major events in a cells life - growth, division, growth, division... cell cycle
the process of dividing the nucleus of a cell into two genetically identical nuclei mitosis
division of the rest of the cell besides the nucleus, final part of cell division (but happens during anaphase and telophase) cytokinesis
stage of mitosis in which chromosomes form, nuclear envelope breaks down and spindle starts to form prophase
stage of mitosis in which chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell, which spindle attached from centromeres to centrioles metaphase
stage of mitosis in which duplicated chromosomes split at the centromeres and spindle shortens, pulling them to opposites sides of the cell anaphase
stage of mitosis in which chromosomes uncoil, nuclear envelopes reform, and spindle breaks down telophase
A densely packed rod or X shaped body composed of DNA that can be seen in a nucleus during mitosis chromosome
What four stages make up mitosis? prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
Loosely packed mass of DNA in the nucleus of a cell during interphase chromatin
hereditary material making up chromosomes; a long twisted molecule DNA
pair of tubular structures that anchor the spindle in animal cells during mitosis centrioles
protein tubes that assist movement of chromosomes during mitosis spindle fibers
What are the two main phases in cell division? mitosis then cytokinesis
A structures that forms during cytokinesis in plant cells to divide the cell in two; the cell wall forms from it cell plate
what does duplicate mean? to double
Why do cells divide? make more cells for growth, make more cells for healing or regeneration, to make more cells that we need (blood, skin, immune, etc), and for asexual reproduction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
