food web overlapping food chains with different pathways for the transfer of food energy in an ecosystem
function the "job" that a part does for an organism
germination the sprouting of a plant from a seed

herbivore a consumer that eats only plants
leaf the part of the plant where most of the photosynthesis occurs
living alive/ something that needs nutrients, water, air, and space to grow and change
mass the amount of matter in something, measured in grams
matter materials or particles that make up both living and nonliving things
nonliving not alive/ does not need food, water, air or space; does not grow or change
nutrient a substance that organisms need in order to survive and grow
omnivore a consumer that eats both plants and animals
organism a living thing
oxygen life supporting component of air
photosynthesis the process of using the energy in sunlight to make food from water and carbon dioxide
predator an animal that hunts, catches, and eats other animals
prey an organism that is hunted, caught, and eaten by other organisms
producer an organism that makes its own food (plants)
root the part of the plant that takes in water and anchors the plant
scavenger an animal, such as a vulture or housefly, that feeds on dead or decaying matter
soil a material made of tiny pieces of rock, minerals, and decayed plant and animal matter
stem the part of the plant that carries water from the roots to the leaves
structure a part that does a certain "job" for an organism
waste unwanted or discarded matter
