Viral Hepatitis

| Hepatitis | Inflammation of the liver, producing swelling, tenderness and sometimes perminent damage. |
| Cause of Hepatitis | by at least 6 different Hepadnaviruses; HAV, HBV,HDV, HEV, HGV, and there could be more. |
| Non-viral Hepatitis | may be caused by chemicals, drugs or alcohol. Every year, more than 600K Americans become newly infected with viral hepatitis, only 10% of these cases are reported. |
| Describe the Liver | Located behind lower ribs on right side.*weighs 3lbs, roughly the size of a football, *All blood leaving the stomach & intestine passes through the live before going to the rest of the body. |
| Filtering Functions of the Liver | Removes and destroys toxins. Stores vitamins, minerals, and sugars. Manufactures proteins involved in clotting, immunity, etc. |

| Characteristics of HBV | Viral Agent: Hepadnaviridae, enveloped icosahedral dsDNA. Tansmission: Blood, ses, can be spread to fetus. Vaccine: Recombinant vacc. produced by yeast. Can become chronic 10% of the time and 90% before the age of 1. |
| Characteristics of HCV | Viral Agent: Flavivirdae, enveloped icosahedron ssRNA. Transmission: Mainly blood, not easily spread through sex or fetus. Vaccine: NONE, Can become Chronic 80% of the time. |
