| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Rock | Earth material made of multiple minerals. |
| Minerals | Earth material that cannot be broken down into different components |
| Hardness | Resistance of being scratched. Tested with a scratch test |
| Color | Mineral property. Least useful when identifying. |
| Streak | Color left behind when mineral is scratched against a streak plate |
| Luster | Shininess of a mineral. How light reflects off of the mineral |
| Cleavage | How a mineral breaks. If smooth it is cleavage. If jagged it is fracture. |
| Metamorphic rock | Formed when a rock is transformed due to heat and pressure. |
| Igneous Rock | Formed from cooling magma. Often has holes or vesicles in the rock. |
| Sedimentary rock | Formed from particles such as pebbles, sand, silt, or clay. May contain fossils |
| Vinegar test | Tests to see if calcite is present in a rock. |
