Sedimentary Rock

QuestionAnswer
What is sedimentary rock? rock that is formed by sediments such as sand, mud, or other types of sediment.
What is compaction? When layers of sediment squeeze down on lower layers of sediment and force out water.
What is cementation? When sediments, such as sand, are "glued" together with natural minerals.
What does a stratified rock look like? A rock with layers.
What is an unstratified rock? A rock without layers.
What is a clastic rock? Sedimentary rocks that are made up of little pieces of other rocks (sediments).
What are examples of clastic rocks? sand, shale, conglomerate
Describe a conglomerate. A rock that is made up of pieces of other rocks, such as pebbles, that are "glued" together.
Describe sandstone. A sedimentary rock composed of sand grains that are cemented and compacted.
Describe shale. The most common sedimentary rock, shale is composed of silt, clay, and mud that have been compacted.
What is a chemical rock? A chemical rock is not made of pieces of sediment, but instead it's made of minerals that were dissolved in water, and the water has evaporated.
What is an organic rock? A rock that is composed of fossils (the sediment is all from living organisms).
