| Uniformitarianism | idea that the geologic processes that operate today also operated in the past and will occur gradually over time |
| Map | a model that show the features of an object/most show the features of Earth's surface |
| Latitude | the distance, measured in degrees, north or south from the equator |
| Longitude | the distance, measured in degrees, east or west of the prime meridian |
| Topographic map | a map that shows the surface features, or topography |
| Contour lines | used to show elevation on a topographic map |
| Relief | the difference in elevation between the highest and lowest points in the area on the map |
| Mineral | a natural occurring, inorganic solid with a crystal structure and a characteristic chemical composition |
| Rock | a solid combination of minerals or mineral materials |
| Luster | the way in which a mineral's surface reflects light |
