Genetics

TermDefinition
Traits A characteristic that an organism can pass to offspring through genes.
Phenotype An organism's physical appearance or visible traits.
Homozygous Having two identical alleles for a trait.
Heterozygous Having two different alleles for a trait.
Incomplete Dominance A blended phenotype. One allele is not completely dominant over the other
Codominance A blended phenotype. One allele is not completely dominant over the other
Punnett Square A chart that shows the possible combinations of alleles that result from a genetic cross.
Genotype An organism's actual gene makeup or allele combinations.
Chromosomes Threadlike structures made of DNA molecules that contain the genes
Genes The set of information that controls a trait; code in the DNA.
Alleles The different forms of a gene.
Recessive An allele that is masked when a dominant allele is present.
Dominant An allele whose trait always shows up in the organism when it is present.
