QuestionAnswer
What does the prefix glyc- mean? Sugar
What does the prefix hypo- mean? Less
What does the prefix hyper- mean? More
The word thermia refers to temperature, what does hypothermia mean? "less temperature", so person's body temperature is too cold, when people fall into ice water
what does hypoglycemia mean? "Less sugar", so person has less sugar in their blood than needed
What does hyperglycemia mean? "more sugar", so person has more sugar in their blood than needed
What reaction does hypo/hyperglycemia affect? Cellular respiration where Glucose & Oxygen are nedded to make ATP, water and CO2
What symptom does a hypoglycemic person feel? Tired because not enough sugar to go through cellular respiration therefore not making as much ATP
What symptoms does a hyperglycemic person feel? Hot because doing too much cellular respuration and the reaction is exothermic.Tired because too much sugar leads to storage of fat.
What is anemia? A disease where a person's blood cannot deliver oxygen as efficiently so person feels tired. Not enough oxygen leads to not enough reactants to do cellular respiration therefore making less ATP
The antibiotic Penicillin inhibits the synthesis of peptidoglycan. What can it be used for? To stop new bacteria from reproducing because bacteria have peptidoglycan on their cell walls, since peptidoglycan cannot be made, new bacteria cannot be made.
Why is alcohol used as a dissinfectant to prevent bacerial infection? Because alcohol denatures proteins and bacteria have peptidoglycan on their cell wall therefore killing bacterial cells (pepti=protein, glycan=glucose)
Why do people that eat a high sodium diet have a higher blood pressure? Eating a high sodium diet leads to hypotonic cells loosing water to the hypertonic blood environment due to osmosis. Cells shrink and water is added to blood therefore increasing blood pressure
the word "tension" refers to blood pressure, what does the word hypertension mean? High blood pressure
the word "tension" refers to blood pressure, what does the word hypotension mean? Low blood pressure
Why does smoking lead to heart disease? Because the heart cell aren't getting enough oxygen to go through cellular respiration therefore heart is not making as much ATP as needed
Why do alcoholism lead to liver failure? Because the smooth ER in liver cells are working too hard to detoxify the cells
Sleep apnea is a disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep, what do you think one of the symptoms of this disorder is? Good thinking =),you feel tired because like anemics you have less oxygen delivered to cells, so less ATP synthesized... SEE now you are thinking like scientists
A diuretic is a type of medicine that allows the kidneys to remove salt from the blood into urine. Would a person taking a diuretic have increased or decreased urine levels? (think about osmosis) Would a person have increased to lowered blood pressure? Increased urine, water moves from hypo to hyper environments so if the salt is being removed from blood and into urine the water will follow so increasing urine levels. Leads to lowered blood pressure
How do antiviral medicines work? By preventing the virus from attaching to a receptor protein or by preventing the virus to use the host cells replicaton machinery
What is smallpox caused by? by 2 viruses, Variola major and Variola minor.
Would an antibiotic like Penicillin be appropiate to treat smallpox? No because antibiotics attack bacterial infections not viral infections

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
