|---|---|
| weathering | the process by which rocks are broken down by physical (mechanical) or chemical processes |
| mechanical weathering | the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces by physical means |
| ice wedging | when water seeps into cracks, freezes, and expands causing the crack to become larger; type of mechanical weathering |
| abrasion | the grinding and wearing away of rock by sand or other rocks rubbing against each other by wind, water and gravity; type of mechanical weathering |
| plant roots | roots grow into existing cracks and make the cracks larger as the root grows; type of mechanical weathering |
| burrowing animals | animals dig through the soil and move soil particles around; type of mechanical weathering |
| chemical weathering | the process by which rocks break down as a result of chemical reactions |
| acid precipitation | rain, sleet, or snow that contains high concentrations of acid; type of chemical weathering |
| oxidation | a chemical reaction where oxygen in the air reacts with iron causing the object to rust; type of chemical weathering |
| lichens | type of plant that produce and release acid that slowly break down rock; type of chemical weathering |
| biological weathering | weathering or breaking down of rock by living things |
| differential weathering | the process by which softer, less weather resistant rocks wear away and leave harder, more weather resistant rocks behind |
| climate | the weather conditions in an area over a long period of time |
