Maria Montessori Italian physician who gained international fame for her philosophy of teaching, which allowed students to learn in a noncompetitive and relaxed atmosphere
McGuffery Readers The first widely used textbooks during the American Common School Period
Montessori Method The teaching principles developed by Maria Montessori emphasizing self-directing learning through sensory experiences
Normal Schools Schools that prepared men and women with the necessary skills to become teachers
Progressives Members of a reform movement in the 1800s
Thomas Jefferson Played a major role in establishing the current American educational system
