The Big Bang Theory

| element | substance that has a characteristic set of physical and chemical properties |
| bright line spectrum | series of thin, colored, uneven spectral bands produced by heating of specific elements |
| Doppler effect | apparent shift in the wavelengths of energy caused by an object moving toward or away from an observer |
| red shift | the lengthening of energy wavelengths produced by an object due to its moving away from the observer |
| blue shift | the shortening of energy wavelengths produced by an object due to it coming towards the observer |
| spectroscope | instrument that splits white light into a band of colors |
| Big Bang Theory | theory that all matter and energy in the universe was compressed into an extremely small volume that suddenly exploded and expanded in all directions |
| background radiation | low levels of energy evenly distributed throughout the universe |
