| Span | the full extent of something from end to end; the amount of space that something covers. |
| supervention bridge | to take place or occur as something additional or extraneous |

| buckle | a flat, typically rectangular frame with a hinged pin, used for joining the ends of a belt or strap. |
| tension | being stretched tight. |
| stable | not likely to give way or overturn; firmly fixed. |
| torsion | the extent to which a curve departs from being planar. |
| cantilever | girder fixed at only one end, used in bridge construction. |
| buckling | bend and give way under pressure or strain. |
| cable | a thick rope of wire |
| rigging | the system of ropes, cables, |
| abutment | a structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span |
| beam | a long, sturdy piece of squared timber |
| snapping | the action of breaking suddenly and completely, |

| pier | a platform supported on pillars or girders leading out from the shore into a body of water, used as a landing stage for boats. |
