| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Balanced Forces | Separate forces on an object that combined do not change the movement of the object. |
| Force | A push or pull that can change the motion of an object |
| Unbalanced Forces | Forces on an object that cause change in the motion of the object |
| Net Force | The sum of all the forces acting on an object. |
| At Rest | The state of an object when it is not in motion. |
| Motion | The change in an object’s position with respect to time and in comparison to the position of other objects used as reference points. |
| Speed | The rate of change of position (or distance traveled) with respect to time; units in which speed is measured are expressed as distance per time (example: meters per second). |
| Direction | A straight path that an object can move along |
| Friction | Force that opposes the motion of one surface across another |
| potential energy | stored energy (more energy up high) |
| kinetic energy | energy in motion (greater energy is down low) |
| velocity | speed with direction |
| acceleration | change in motion, speed up, slow down, change direction |
