| Lithosphere | Solid, outer part of the Earth that includes the brittle upper portion of the mantle and the crust. |
| Conservation of Matter | Matter cannot be created or destroyed in an isolated system, it can only be changed into different forms. |
| Metamorphic rock | Rock that forms from an existing rock that is changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions. |
| Magma | Molten rock that is stored inside the Earth. |
| Lava | Molten rock that flows over the surface. |
| Sediment | Small, solid pieces of material that comes from rocks or remains of organisms being broken down by weathering. |
| Weathering | Process that breaks down rock and other substances into smaller particles and sediment. |
| Erosion | Process by which water, ice, wind, or gravity moves weathered particles of rock and soil. |
