| catastrophism | the idea that geologic events occur suddenly |
| crystallization | when a solid forms into an organized structure called a crystal |
| erosion | when sediment is carried away, usually by wind or water |
| fossil | the solidified remains or imprints of a once |
| igneous rock | rock formed when lava and magma cools |
| metamorphic rock | rock formed when existing rock is squeezed and/or partly melted. |
| paleontologist | a scientist who studies fossils and ancient life. |
| Pangaea | a large landmass that contained all the present |
| plate tectonics | the study of the movements of Earth's continental plates |
| rock cycle | the process involving the formation and recycling of rock. |
| sedimentary rock | rock formed when sediment is lithified |
| superposition | principle that states younger rocks are on top of older rocks |
| uniformitarianism | the idea that geologic processes are slow and that those occurring today also occurred in the past at the same rates |
| weathering | the gradual breakdown of rock, usually by wind or water |
| fossil fuel | coal, oil, natural gas, and other fuels that are ancient remains of plants and animals. |
| sedimentation | the action or process of forming or depositing sediment |
| cementation | the process in which dissolved minerals crystallize and glue particles of sediment together |
| deformation | the change in the shape of rock in response to pressure and stress |
