Cellular Respiration
Vocabulary
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Aerobic: | Is the process of producing cellular energy involving oxygen. Cells break down food in the mitochondria in a long, multistep process that produces roughly 36 ATP. |
Anaerobic: | Is respiration using electron acceptors other than molecular oxygen (O2). |
ATP: | Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP for short, is the energy currency of life. ATP is a high-energy molecule found in every cell. Its job is to store and supply the cell with needed energy. |
Cellular Respirtion: | Is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and then release waste products. |
Fermentation: | Is the process in which a substance breaks down into a simpler substance. |
Glycolysis: | The enzymatic breakdown of a carbohydrate (such as glucose) by way of phosphate derivatives with the production of pyruvic or lactic acid and energy stored in high-energy phosphate bonds of ATP. |
Mitochondria: | Any of various round or long cellular organelles of most eukaryotes that are found outside the nucleus, produce energy for the cell through cellular respiration, and are rich in fats, proteins, and enzymes — see cell illustration. |
