Mantle The layer of soft, solid rock below Earth's plate
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Metamorphic rock The rock type formed when heat or pressure deep underground changes existing rock
Mid-ocean ridge An underwater mountain range formed when two plates move apart
Model an object, diagram, or computer program that helps us understand something by making it simpler or easier to see
Moon a rocky sphere that travels around a planet
Moon phase the shape of the illuminated part of the Moon as it appears from Earth
Optimal Most successful, considering the situation
Orbit the nearly circular path a smaller object (like the Moon) travels around a larger object (like Earth)
Outer layer Earth’s outermost layer of hard, solid rock that is underneath the soil, vegetation, and water
Pattern something we observe to be similar over and over again
Plate one of the very large sections of hard, solid rock that make up Earth’s outer layer
Plate boundary the place where two plates meet
