Day/Night and Seasons

rotation The spinning of Earth on its axis
revolution The movement of an object around another object
axis An imaginary line that passes through Earth's center and the North and South poles, about which Earth rotates

365 1/4 number of days take for earth to make one revolution around the sun
winter solstice shortest day of the year; December 21st in the Northern Hemisphere and June 22nd in the Southern Hemisphere
Summer Solstice Day with the most hours of sunlight and the fewest hours of darkness; June 22nd in the Northern Hemisphere and December 21st in the Southern Hemisphere
autumnal equinox date September 22-23 in the Northern Hemisphere
Spring Equinox date March 21-22 in the Northern Hemisphere
Equinox Each of the two times of the year when days and nights are of equal length
Solstice The two days of the year on which the sun reaches its greatest distance north or south of the equator
What causes day and night? The Earth's rotation on its axis; occurs every 24 hours.
What causes the seasons? The tilt of the Earth's axis and its revolution around the sun.
Winter. On Earth, the season when a hemisphere is tilted AWAY from the sun.
Summer On Earth, the season when a hemisphere is tilted TOWARDS the sun.
