1C Astronomy Vocab

TermDefinition
Convective Zone The suns radiative zone region in where moving gases transfer energy.
Radiative Zone A cold, dense region of the sun between the core and convective zone.
Photosphere The surface part of the sun that is visible.
Chromosphere The middle layer in the sun's atmosphere above the photosphere.
Corona The last or outer layer in the sun's atmosphere.
Sunspot A cooler, darker area of gas on the sun's photosphere.
Prominence A reddish, large loop of gas that sticks out from the sun's surface and linking parts of the sunspot region.
Solar Flare A gas eruption from the surface of the sun that occurs when the loops in the sunspot region contact.
Coronal Mass Ejection Coronal gas that the sun throws into space.
Kepler's Law A theory of laws describing planetary orbiy around the sun.
Eccentricity The measure of a circular orbit.
Elliptical Orbit An oval shaped orbit.
Formula for Eccentricity The distance between foci divided by the major axis length.
