3.1 Abiotic Factors

QuestionAnswer
Earth is unique in our solar system in that it has _______________? water
Scientists estimate that the number of different species on earth may range from ___ to ___ million 8 to 9
What is a biosphere? All living things on earth existing in a thin layer, including air, land and water on or near the earth's surface.
What three elements does the biosphere include? Air, Land & Water
If an apple represented the Earth, the biosphere would be the thickness of the ______________ earth's crust
What is biotic Every living thing such as dogs, humans, plants and bacteria
What is abiotic non living organisms such as sunlight, temperature, soil
What are the small divisions of the biosphere? Biomes
Name the 8 terrestrial biomes Tundra, Boreal Forest, Temperate Deciduous Forest, Temperate Rainforest, Grassland, Tropical Rainforest, Desert, Permanent Ice
What are the 4 main abiotic factors in the biomes? Temperature & Precipitation, Elevation, Latitude and Wind/Current
What is Elevation? The height of the land above sea level. The higher the land, the colder it gets.
What is Latitude? The distance from the equator. Near the equator is warm, but the poles are very cold.
What is Temperature? How hot or cold something is
What is precipitation? Amount of water in the atmosphere in the form of snow, rain, hail, sleet, etc
What is climate? The average temperature and precipitation in a specific region
Why are the North and South Pole very cold? Because they're far from the equator
Why is Middle Africa/America/Europe warmer? Because they're near the equator
Why are wind & currents related? They are related because as air blows on the water, water is good at retaining heat. The wind patter drives the movement of ocean currents. Ocean currents circulate the heat around the world, affecting climate
What is a rain shadow? The backside of a mountain which is very dry (usually desert biome)
What is a climatograph? Shows long term climate trends & average temperature and precipitation in a given area on a graph
What are the three kinds of adaptions? Structural Adaptions, Physiological adaptions and behaviour adaptions
Describe structural adaptions Adaptions of the landscape / structures
Describe physiological adaptions and give examples Something happens in the organism. i.e. A enzyme helps a organism break down food for energy so it stays alive.
describe and give examples of behavioural adaptions helps the organism survive and reproduce better using their behaviour. ie. hibernation helps the animal retain heat and energy. Migration helps retain heat and energy. Fish swim in groups for protection.
