Atomic Theory
The study of atoms part 2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Alkali Metals | 1st Group (family) of elements.Highly reactive with water and have 1 valence electron |
| Alkaline Earth Metals | 2nd Group (family) of elements. Reactive with water and have 2 valence electrons |
| Transition Metals | Found in the center of the PT. Non-reactive metals that do not follow the 'valence electrons' category. |
| Halogens | 7th group of elements. highly reactive with alkali metals and form salts. They have 7 valence electrons. |
| Nobel/Inert Gases | 8th group of elements. VERY NON REACTIVE because they have a full valence shell (cloud). They have 8 valence electrons. |
| Valence Electron | Electrons farthest from the nucleus. |
| Octet Rule | Elements strive to have a full valence shell (8), so they will share with other elements creating bonds. Except for He. |
| Compound | When two or more different elements CHEMICALLY combine. |
| Conservation Of Mass | Matter is never created or destroyed, it is simply recycled. |
| Covalent Bond | Bond that exists between two non-Metal in a compound. |
| Ionic Bond | Bond that exist between a metal and a non-metal in a compound. |
| Molecule | Two or more atoms chemically combined. They can be the same, for example hydrogen will bond with itself. |
